Watering Your Lawn

You've probably often wondered how frequently you need to water your lawn. Well, the answer is, for most lawns, 1.5 Inches of water per week are necessary to keep your lawn looking lush and healthy.

When the season starts, it is very important to decide which is most important to you - a green lush healthy lawn, or allowing the lawn to go "dormant". A "dormant" lawn is one that is not yet dead, but has started to turn brown, and has basically stopped growing.

It is important to decide, because taking your lawn in and out of dormancy causes the grass to use up many of its food reserves, which can cause the grass to permanently die.

A term known as "footprinting" is often used to determine when a lawn should be watered. If you walk on the grass, and it does not stand upright again, it is a good time to water the grass.

Note that the best time to water your lawn is in early evening, or early morning, before the sun comes out. Watering your lawn in the middle of the afternoon often does not help your grass to get water deep in the roots where it needs the water the most, as most of the water will evaporate in the hot sun before reaching the roots.

Overwatering will cause your roots to begin to rot and decay. If using a sprinkler system, make sure to distribute water evenly across your entire lawn to prevent patterns of green lush grass surrounded by water starved surrounding grass. The average sprinkler system only needs to run for an average of 20 minutes per section.

Consider using a higher quality sprinkler, such as the Melnor Pulsating Sprinkler.
